GVEC’s Annual Winter Horse Health Seminar |
Saturday February 6, 2010, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm
Our annual Winter Horse Health Seminar was held at the Wheatland-Chili High School at 940 North Road in Scottsville on February 6, 2010. This popular event was offered to local horsemen free of charge, thanks to the generous support of many national and local sponsors.
Our program included an update on the new targeted deworming program that GVEC introduced in 2009. We summarized the rate of parasite egg shedding we have detected in area horses and gave some feedback on how the strategy of “more monitoring, less medication” is working out in our horse community. We also presented a real case study handled by GVEC vets that dramatically illustrated the body's capacity to heal itself when supported by excellent nursing.
Dr. Amy Grice joined us as one of our two featured speakers. Dr. Grice is an equine veterinarian who earned her veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Her presentation, Emergencies, Time to Call the Veterinarian, discussed the many things that horses do to get themselves in trouble. She covered lacerations, choke, fractures, sudden in-coordination, sore eyes, swollen legs and other common emergencies. She left her listeners feeling confident that they knew what problems they could handle themselves and what things should prompt them to call in a veterinarian.
Dr. Susan Fubini gave the second talk of the day. Dr. Fubini is the Chief of the Large Animal Surgery Section at Cornell University, and she discussed The Many Faces of Colic. Dr. Fubini showed how horses with abdominal pain are evaluated and how veterinarians determine what is causing the pain. She explained the various disorders that cause colic using real case examples. Dr. Fubini left the audience with a better understanding of what colic is, how to recognize a serious case and modern options for treatment.
We once again hosted a trade show displaying exhibits of interest to horse owners. The morning also included our Educator of the Year Award, a raffle of several door prizes, and coffee and donuts.
